De waarde van natuurlijke diamanten wordt bepaald door verschillende parameters; deze worden gewoonlijk "de vier C's" genoemd. Ze zijn samengesteld uit De Karaat, slijpsel, helderheid, en de Kleur van de diamanten. Elk van deze onderwerpen wordt apart toegelicht om jou, de koper, een idee te geven aan welke van deze onderwerpen je prioriteit geeft, wat voor jou het belangrijkste is in een juweel.

De CARAT

Het gewicht van diamanten wordt uitgedrukt in karaat, dus 1 karaat is ongeveer 0,20 gram. De decimalen van het gewicht van een diamant worden punten genoemd, 100 punten is gelijk aan 1 karaat. In tegenstelling tot goud definieert het karaat alleen het gewicht van een steen, bij goud definieert het de zuiverheid van het goud, zoals 18 karaat goud. Het gewicht wordt bepaald op een weegschaal en staat ook vermeld op het certificaat van elke diamant.

Kortom, een Diamond van 1,85 karaat weegt 1 karaat en 85 punten.

DE HELDERHEID

De zuiverheid van een natuurlijke diamant is gebaseerd op de aanwezigheid van natuurlijke onzuiverheden of 'insluitsels' in de steen. Tijdens de vorming van de diamant kunnen onzuiverheden zoals vuil of gasbellen vast komen te zitten in de diamant tijdens het kristallisatieproces. Deze insluitsels maken deel uit van wat de steen uniek maakt. Ze zijn een natuurlijk fenomeen en we vinden altijd diamanten met insluitsels die onzichtbaar zijn met het blote oog (oogzuiver). Slechts ongeveer 1-2% van de natuurlijke diamanten wereldwijd zijn volledig zuiver of Intern Flawless. Deze zijn uiteraard veel duurder door hun zeldzaamheid.

DE KLEUR

Meer dan 90% van alle natuurlijke diamanten hebben een gelige tint. De intensiteit van de kleurverzadiging in de diamant bepaalt de kleurgraad. Hoe lager de kleurverzadiging in de steen, hoe witter hij eruit ziet en hoe hoger de waarde. De kleur van natuurlijke diamanten wordt bepaald door een letter, de hoogste kleur wordt gedefinieerd door "D" Kleur. Vanaf daar gaan we naar beneden naar de letter "Z".

 Als de kleurverzadiging extreem hoog is, krijgen we een andere categorie, voornamelijk de FANTASTISCHE KLEUREN.

Deze natuurlijke diamanten zijn zeer kleurverzadigd. Afhankelijk van het type kleur springt de waarde omhoog. Hoe zeldzamer de kleur, hoe hoger de waarde. Dit betekent dat Rood, Blauw, Roze, Groen en Oranje de zeldzaamste kleuren zijn en extreem hoge waarden kunnen bereiken.

DE SLUITING

De proporties, symmetrie en afwerkingsgraad van een diamant bepalen de kwaliteit van de slijpvorm. Een goede afwerkingsgraad getuigt van het vakmanschap van de diamantslijper. Het verwijst naar de symmetrie van de facetten en hun algemene afwerking. De best geslepen diamanten hebben ook de juiste proporties tussen de verschillende delen van de diamant. Als deze verhoudingen niet optimaal zijn, worden het vuur en de schittering van de diamant aangetast en kunnen er ongewenste visuele effecten optreden. Naast de meest populaire 'Round Brilliant' slijpvorm, zijn er een reeks andere veelgebruikte modellen, en men kan ook prachtige 'fancy cut' diamanten tegenkomen... De slijpgraad beschrijft een reeks parameters van de natuurlijke diamant: proporties, culet- en tafelgrootte, gordeldikte, slijpsel en symmetrie.

De vier C's zijn een geweldig hulpmiddel als je overweegt een steen te kopen. Voor iedereen is het belang van de 4 C's anders. De meerderheid van de klanten zal in eerste instantie vragen om een perfecte steen, dat wil zeggen uitstekend geslepen, gaaf en de hoogste kleur...., maar daar kunnen ze zelden voor betalen...
